Quick answer

A fever that looks the same at the start can come from very different causes. A rapid test helps the doctor tell dengue, influenza and COVID apart within a short time, and that changes what needs to be done next. Dengue in particular needs monitoring, because the greatest risk comes not on the day the fever is highest, but when the fever starts to come down.

When a test is worth doing

Fever for more than two days

A fever that does not settle after two days should be assessed, not waited on any longer.

Body aches and pain behind the eyes

This combination, with fever, is the pattern that makes a doctor think of dengue.

There are dengue cases in the neighbourhood

If a neighbour or a family member has just had dengue, the threshold for doing a test should be lower.

Fever with cough and a sore throat

This pattern points more towards influenza or COVID. A test helps to confirm it.

You need to know for work

Some employers require confirmation before an employee returns to work.

There is someone at risk at home

If there is a baby, an older person or someone with a chronic illness in the house, knowing the cause changes the precautions.

Why dengue needs monitoring, not just testing

This is the part most often misunderstood. Many people think the danger of dengue is the high fever. In fact the most critical period is usually when the fever starts to come down, because that is when fluid can leak out of the blood vessels.

That is why the doctor does not simply do a test and send you home. If dengue is confirmed or suspected, the doctor will tell you the warning signs to watch for and when to come back for a blood check.

Signs that need to be brought in straight away: continuous vomiting, severe stomach pain, bleeding from the gums or nose, bruising with no cause, feeling very weak or dizzy on standing, and passing less urine.

The limits of rapid tests

Rapid tests are useful but not perfect. The timing of the test affects the result. A dengue test done too early can show negative even when the person does have dengue.

That is why the doctor assesses the result together with the symptoms, the examination and the course of the illness, rather than reading the test result on its own. A negative result does not necessarily mean you can stop monitoring.

Register at the counterBring your identity card. If you are using an employer or insurance panel, tell the staff at the counter so they can check your eligibility first.
  2. 2
The doctor examines youThe doctor looks at the affected area, asks how long it has been there, what you have already tried, and whether anyone else in the house has the same thing.
  3. 3
Diagnosis and treatment optionsThe doctor explains what they see and the options available. If further tests are needed, that is explained before anything is done.
  4. 4
Treatment and follow-upMedication is given with clear instructions. If the condition needs monitoring, the doctor tells you when to come back and what signs to watch for.

Common questions

How long before the result comes out?

A rapid test usually gives a result within a short time at the same visit. Additional laboratory tests take longer.

Do I need an appointment?

No. The clinic is open 24 hours and takes walk-in patients.

The dengue test is negative, does that mean I am safe?

Not necessarily. A test done too early can be negative. If the fever continues, come back to be assessed.

Can I get a medical certificate?

Yes, if the doctor assesses that your condition requires one after examination.

Can I use my employer panel?

Some panels cover these tests, some do not. Check first or tell the staff when you register.

My child has a fever in the middle of the night, should I come in?

If the fever is high, the child is very weak, or you are worried, come in. The clinic is open around the clock for this reason.

Still have a question?

Send a message and clinic staff will answer. If you need to be examined, just come in. No appointment needed.
