Quick answer

The FOMEMA examination is the compulsory health screening for foreign workers in Malaysia, carried out at a clinic registered with FOMEMA. It involves a doctor examination, blood tests, a urine test and a chest x-ray. The employer has to register the worker through the FOMEMA portal first, then the worker comes to the clinic with the original passport and permit. Because this clinic has its own x-ray room, workers do not have to be sent elsewhere for the scan.

Before the worker comes

Register in the portal first

The employer or agent registers the worker through the FOMEMA portal before coming. Without registration, the examination cannot be submitted.

Original passport, not a copy

The original passport is required to verify identity. A copy is not accepted.

A valid work permit

Bring the permit document or the permit details given by the employer.

Come in good health

If the worker has a fever or is unwell, it is better to postpone. An acute condition can affect the test results.

Clothing without metal

For the chest x-ray, clothing without metal buttons, chains or large zips makes the process easier.

Say if there is any medication

Bring a list of the medication being taken, or bring the medicine containers themselves.

What is examined

The scope is set by FOMEMA, not by the clinic. It normally covers the following.

  • Physical examination by a doctor
  • Blood tests according to the panel set by FOMEMA
  • Urine test including drug screening
  • Chest x-ray to screen for tuberculosis
  • The medical report form that is submitted to the FOMEMA system

Why x-ray on the premises matters

Many clinics do not have their own x-ray room, so the worker has to be sent to another imaging centre and come back again. For an employer sending several workers at once, that means losing half a working day for each person.

This clinic has an x-ray room on the premises, listed in the facility scope of the clinic registration certificate. The examination can be completed in one visit.

The clinic is also open 24 hours, so employers with shift operations can send workers outside office hours.

When the examination has to be done

The examination schedule is set by immigration and FOMEMA conditions, not by the clinic. Generally a worker is examined after arriving in Malaysia and again at the intervals that are set.

Because the conditions can change and differ by sector and by the worker country of origin, confirm the actual schedule with FOMEMA or your agent. We cannot confirm the permit status of any worker.

If a worker fails the examination, there is an appeal process through FOMEMA. The doctor will explain the result and the next steps.

Common questions

Do I need to make an appointment?

Not necessary, but for a group of workers send a WhatsApp message first so the clinic can arrange the queue and avoid a long wait.

Do workers have to fast?

Some blood tests are better done after fasting. Send a message first and staff will tell you the preparation needed for your case.

How long before the result comes out?

The examination at the clinic takes less than an hour. The final confirmation through the FOMEMA system takes several working days and is outside the control of the clinic.

Can I send many workers at once?

Yes. Tell us the number of workers by WhatsApp so the clinic can prepare.

A worker failed the examination, can we appeal?

There is an appeal process through FOMEMA. The doctor will explain the result and what can be done next.

Does the clinic do examinations for foreign students as well?

Yes, health screening for foreign students can also be handled. Contact the clinic with the requirements of your institution.

Still have a question?

Send a message and clinic staff will answer. If you need to be examined, just come in. No appointment needed.
