Quick answer

An IV drip is the giving of fluid directly into a blood vessel when the body is losing fluid faster than it can be replaced by drinking. It is given based on the doctor assessment, not on request. The conditions that commonly need it are continuous vomiting, severe diarrhoea, and fever with signs of fluid loss. For most mild cases, an oral rehydration drink is enough and is safer.

Signs of fluid loss that need assessment

Vomiting so much you cannot drink

If every drink comes straight back up, fluid will not get in by mouth. This is the most common reason.

Continuous diarrhoea

Particularly if it has happened several times in a short period and comes with general weakness.

Passing less urine, or dark urine

A sign you can see yourself, and it means the body is conserving water.

Dizziness on standing

Feeling faint when getting up from sitting or lying down is a sign that blood pressure is affected.

A young child who is listless with sunken eyes

Children lose fluid faster than adults. Do not wait long.

Older people who are drinking little

The sense of thirst decreases with age, so fluid loss can happen without feeling thirsty.

When a drip is needed, and when it is not

A drip is not a treatment for tiredness or for speeding up recovery in general. It is a treatment for fluid loss that cannot be replaced by mouth.

For mild cases, an oral rehydration solution is often just as effective and does not involve a needle. The doctor will assess and tell you which one suits your condition.

We do not offer drips as a beauty or energy treatment. Each one is given for a medical reason after examination.

What happens during treatment

The doctor examines you and decides the type and amount of fluid needed. A fine needle is placed in the hand and the fluid flows in slowly. You lie down in the treatment room throughout that time.

How long it takes depends on the amount of fluid and your condition. Staff will monitor you and the doctor reassesses you before you are allowed to go home.

If your condition points to something more serious, the doctor will refer you to hospital rather than continuing treatment at the clinic.

Common questions

Can I ask for a drip only, without seeing a doctor?

No. A drip is given after a doctor assessment, because it is a medical treatment with its own risks.

How long does it take?

It depends on the amount of fluid and your condition. The doctor will tell you what to expect before starting.

Do you have vitamin or energy drips?

We do not offer drips as a beauty or energy treatment. What is given is determined by medical need after examination.

Can young children have it?

Yes, if the doctor assesses that it is needed. Children are assessed more carefully because their fluid balance is more easily affected.

Is it available at night?

Yes, the clinic is open 24 hours with a doctor on duty.

Can I use my employer panel?

It depends on the terms of your panel. Tell the staff when you register.

Still have a question?

Send a message and clinic staff will answer. If you need to be examined, just come in. No appointment needed.
