Quick answer

Circumcision is done by a doctor in the clinic treatment room under local anaesthetic. Age groups are separated because the preparation, method and recovery time differ between babies, children and adults. Booking is made in advance so the clinic can prepare a slot and the equipment, and so that you do not have to wait alongside walk-in patients.

Age groups

Babies and children 1 to 5 years

Recovery is normally fastest in this group. Parents are given clear wound care instructions before going home.

Children 6 to 12 years

The most common group, particularly during the school holidays. Booking early is advised because slots fill up quickly.

Teenagers 13 to 20 years

The preparation and method differ a little. The doctor will explain before the procedure begins.

Adults

Can be done for medical reasons or by personal choice. The doctor will assess and explain the recovery.

If there is a clotting problem

Tell the doctor if your child or you have a bleeding problem, or are taking blood thinning medication. This changes the approach.

If there is a skin condition or infection

If there is an active infection in that area, the procedure is postponed until it has cleared.

Before the day of the procedure

A few things that make it easier.

  • Book a slot by WhatsApp, do not just come in
  • Say the age and any health problem or medication
  • Bring the identity card or the child health card
  • Loose clothing makes things easier afterwards
  • For children, bring an adult who can stay with them throughout
  • Plan to rest afterwards, not to carry straight on to other activities

Care after circumcision

The doctor will give wound care instructions specific to your case. In general, the area needs to be kept clean and dry according to the instructions, and pain relief is given if needed.

Follow-up dressing can be done at the clinic. Because the clinic is open 24 hours, if there is any concern at night you do not have to wait until morning.

When you need to come back straight away

These are not things to wait on.

  • Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
  • Swelling that gets worse after a day or two
  • Pus or a bad smell
  • Fever
  • The child cannot pass urine
  • Pain that is getting worse, not easing

Common questions

Do I need to book first?

Yes. Send a WhatsApp message with the age and the date you want, so the clinic can arrange a slot.

Is it under general or local anaesthetic?

The procedure at the clinic is done under local anaesthetic. Cases that need a general anaesthetic are referred to hospital.

How long is the recovery?

It differs with age and with the case. The doctor will tell you what to expect and when to come back for a review.

Can it be done during the school holidays?

Yes, and that is the busiest time. Book early.

Can I use my employer panel?

It depends on the terms of your panel. Some panels do not cover elective procedures. Check first.

Can adults have it done?

Yes. The doctor will assess and explain the procedure and the recovery before you make a decision.

Still have a question?

Send a message and clinic staff will answer. If you need to be examined, just come in. No appointment needed.
