Quick answer

A wound that is cleaned and closed earlier has a lower risk of infection and usually heals with a finer scar. The clinic handles wound cleaning, suturing, regular dressing, and minor procedures in the treatment room. Deep wounds, wounds on a joint or on the face, and contaminated wounds need to be assessed by a doctor rather than treated at home by yourself.

Wounds that should be brought in

A wound that gapes open

If the edges of the wound cannot be brought together on your own, it may need stitches. The longer you wait, the fewer the options.

A deep or contaminated wound

Wounds from rusty metal, soil, or animals need thorough cleaning and an assessment of infection risk.

A wound on the face or a joint

These locations affect appearance and movement. They should be assessed, not just covered over.

A wound that becomes swollen

An area that becomes redder, hotter and more painful after a day or two, or that produces pus, is a sign of infection.

Burns and scalds

A scald wider than the palm of your hand, or on the face, hands and joints, needs to be examined.

Boils and abscesses

A lump with pus that is hot and painful usually needs to be managed, not squeezed yourself.

Why timing matters for a wound

There is a window of time for suturing a wound. After that period, the risk of locking bacteria inside the wound becomes higher than the benefit of closing it, and the doctor may choose a different approach.

That is why a wound is not something to leave until morning. The clinic being open 24 hours is partly for this reason.

The second thing often overlooked is tetanus vaccination status. The doctor will ask, so if you remember when your last injection was, it helps.

What to do before you arrive

The first few minutes make a difference.

  • Press on the wound with a clean cloth to stop the bleeding
  • Raise the injured part higher than the heart if you can
  • Wash the wound with clean water if it is dirty, do not scrub hard
  • Do not apply toothpaste, coffee, oil or anything else to the wound
  • For a scald, cool it under running lukewarm water, not ice
  • If an object is embedded in the wound, do not pull it out, let the doctor deal with it

After stitches

The doctor will tell you when the stitches need to come out, and this differs with the location of the wound. Stitches on the face are removed earlier than stitches on the leg.

The dressing needs to be kept dry according to the instructions given. If the dressing gets wet or dirty, or the wound becomes more painful and starts to smell, come back without waiting for the date you were given.

For workers who need documentation for an employer or a claim, tell the doctor during treatment so that whatever can be confirmed is recorded at the time.

Common questions

How long after it happens can a wound still be sutured?

There is a time limit, and it differs with the type and location of the wound. Come as early as you can. If it is already late, the doctor will explain the other options.

Do I need a tetanus injection?

It depends on the type of wound and when your last injection was. The doctor will assess and tell you.

Can stitches be removed at this clinic even if they were put in elsewhere?

Yes. Bring documentation or information about when and where they were done.

Can burns be treated here?

Minor scalds can. Burns that are extensive, deep, or involve the face and airway are referred to hospital.

Do you have a procedure to remove warts or small lumps?

The doctor will assess your case and tell you whether it can be managed here or is better referred.

A work injury, can I use a panel?

It depends on the terms of your company panel. Tell the staff when you register.

Still have a question?

Send a message and clinic staff will answer. If you need to be examined, just come in. No appointment needed.
