Acne Scars and Marks

Dark marks, uneven skin and pits after acne settles. Two different problems with different expectations. The doctor will explain which one you have.

acne scars

Quick answer

What is left after acne falls into two groups. Dark marks or redness are a colour change, and they usually fade over several months, faster with sun protection and suitable treatment. Pits and raised scars are a change in skin structure, and they do not fade on their own. The most effective thing for scarring is controlling acne that is still active, because every new deep spot can add another scar.

What should be assessed

Dark marks after spots dry up

Usually a colour change rather than a scar. It tends to fade, but sun exposure slows it down.

Redness that lasts a long time

Red marks after acne settles can last for months. This is different from acne that is still active.

Small pits like pinpricks

This is a structural change. It does not fade on its own and needs a different approach.

Acne is still coming

If acne is still active, controlling it matters more than treating old scars.

Scars that are raised and growing

A scar that rises above skin level and keeps growing may be a keloid, which is managed differently.

Marks after squeezing

Squeezed spots more often leave permanent marks. If this keeps happening, it is worth discussing.

Colour change compared with a true scar

This is the most important distinction to understand, because it sets a realistic expectation.

After an inflamed spot settles, the skin there can become darker or stay red. This is a temporary effect of the inflammation. In most people it fades over three to twelve months. Sun exposure clearly slows this down, so sun protection is part of the treatment rather than an extra.

A true scar means the skin at that spot has changed shape, either sunken or raised. This does not disappear with time or with whitening cream. Treating it requires procedures that change the structure of the skin, and that is usually outside the scope of a general clinic.

Why controlling active acne comes first

Treating scars while acne is still appearing every month is work without an end. Every new deep spot can add another scar.

That is why, if you come in with both scars and active acne, the doctor will focus on the active acne first. After several months without new deep spots, it then makes sense to assess what scarring remains.

This also means timing matters. Acne treated early produces fewer scars than acne left for a year or two.

What can be done at a general clinic

At a general clinic, the doctor can assess the type of marking you have, control any acne that is still active, and treat the colour change, including advice on sun protection and suitable topical medication.

For pits and structural scars, the treatments people usually hear about such as laser, microneedling, subcision and filler are aesthetic or specialist procedures. This clinic does not offer them, and we will not pretend otherwise.

If that is what you need, the doctor can explain the options and give a referral so you are not choosing based on advertising alone.

Common questions

Can whitening cream remove acne scars?

Cream can help with colour change, but it does not alter pits or raised scars. Some whitening creams with unclear ingredients can also make dark patches worse. Bring the cream you use when you come.

How long do dark marks take to fade?

Usually three to twelve months, depending on skin tone, how severe the original inflammation was, and sun exposure. There is no way to give an exact date.

Why does the doctor say to treat the acne first?

Because new deep spots add new scars. Treating old scars while new ones keep forming means you never reach the end.

Do I need sun protection even if I stay indoors?

If you are in places exposed to sunlight, including while driving and near windows, yes. For dark marks after acne this is one of the clearest things that helps.

Does this clinic do laser for scars?

No. Aesthetic procedures require separate approval under the aesthetic medical practice guidelines. The doctor can explain the options and give a referral.

Is there anything I can do so acne does not leave scars?

Two things are clearest: treat deep acne early, and do not squeeze. Beyond that, protect healing areas from the sun.
